Help Lower Textbook Costs for Students
Are you an instructor who is concerned about the impact of high textbook costs for your students’ academic success? Explore possible open textbook solutions by attending a two-hour workshop and then writing a short textbook review. You will receive a $200 stipend for your efforts!
Did You Know……
- The high cost of some course materials can impede students’ academic success.
- While textbooks and educational materials are decreasing, textbooks @ WVU on average cost per student $900 per year.
- Seven out of 10 students don’t purchase a required textbook during their academic career because of cost.
- 60% of students have delayed purchasing textbooks until they’ve received their financial aid.
- Right now OER can provide access to learning materials and eliminate roadblocks to student success.
Open Textbooks
Open textbooks can help alleviate the burden of textbook costs for students and provide faculty with content that can be customized for their course. Open textbooks are complete and authoritative, adopted by many faculty across the country, and licensed to be freely used, edited, and distributed.
What You Can Do
Attend the Open Textbook Workshop and Textbook Review – a 45 minute session where you can discover open textbooks in your field. After the workshop, you will be asked to write a short review of an open textbook. Your review will benefit other faculty considering adopting open textbooks. You’ll receive a $200 stipend for your participation and a written review.

Who: The workshop will be led by WVU Librarians Martha Yancey and Martin Dunlap.
Please submit your application here by Monday April 1, 2024. Capacity is limited and open textbooks are not available for all subjects. Preference is based on textbook subject availability.
